Emiliana, 47 yrs. old, enjoys having her hair done by Silvia while recovering from gynecology surgery. She is lives with her husband, who works as a helper in construction, and 5 children.
Josefina, 39 yrs. old, walks back to her room with her nurse, Kim. Josefina is a single mom with 6 children who lives in complete poverty with no one to help her. She is very thankful for the care she has received following her hernia operation.
Yaneth, 28 yrs. old, enjoys a quiet time of coloring after a successful surgery to remove a gallstone the size of an acorn. She waited 7 years to have the surgery because she did not want to leave her “baby,” who is now 6 years old.
Valentina, 60 yrs. old, pictured here with Ruth, kept us laughing with her wonderful sense of humor. She lives in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Santa Cruz with her son. She supports herself by cleaning the bathrooms in the marketplace. She has needed surgery for about 10 years. She said she could not come in sooner because she owed money to the bank and had to keep working to pay off her debt. She quickly won everyone’s heart!
Flora, 62 yrs. old, sits with her nurse, Carol. Flora, who lives in La Paz, told us that she met someone there who had surgery at Mission of Hope, so she rode the bus 16 hours to Santa Cruz in hopes of having the surgery she needed.
